Travelin’ with Billie Holiday
Travelin’ with Billie Holiday, oil on 18×24 canvas. This piece was inspired by a black and white photograph of Billie Holiday taken at an airport. I chose to place her in a downtown setting where she might have performed at a prominent nightclub outside of which waves the confederate flag signaling that, while Ms. Holiday might have headlined the club, she would not have been allowed to enter through its front door. She also would not have been allowed lodging at the establishment where she was contracted to perform. I chose Prussian blue and Naples yellow as the primary colors of my palette to convey a feeling of history and ghostliness. The original artwork is SOLD.
