Queen as Pawn
Queen as Pawn, oil on 24×48 Gallery Wrapped Canvas. When I conceived of the idea of this work, I painted the figure first and it was only after the figure was on canvas (alone and by herself for weeks!) that I knew which attributes the figure evolved to expose: vulnerability and expendability. In deliberating how best to represent those attributes, the game of chess came to mind. In the game of chess, the Queen is the most powerful piece because of her mobility while the weakest and most disposable piece is the pawn, the expendable foot soldier that services the front lines. When functioning as designed, the Queen’s greatest asset also becomes her Achilles Heel as her power to move anywhere she pleases makes her susceptible to attack and, like the expendable pawn, the Queen becomes disposable, eligible to be sacrificed for the benefit of the King.
