• Obatala god of the orishas, oil on 36x48 gallery wrapped canvas

Obatala, oil on 36×48 gallery wrapped canvas. Obatala (pronunciation) is Orisha, a divine being (similar to Christian angels). Obatala is a god of mercy, wisdom and compassion. A child and obedient servant of God, he was commissioned with sculpting the human bodies from mud and clay into which God would blow the breath of life. At some point, Obatala had an off day and he drank too much palm wine which resulted in defects. Obatala was humbled and today, “Obatala’s mercy flows from the self-awareness of a powerful but negligent god toward frail but blameless created beings.”
