Colored Gurls, oil on 18×24 wood. This work is a tribute to Ntozake Shange’s first work, a choreopoem, for colored girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow is enuf. The poem as a theater piece is unparalleled. Tyler Perry added further to its legacy by producing a movie and my image is based on one of the stills from that move.
colored girls cry / colored girls die \ colored girls try / colored girls are intense \ colored with reams of hues, stories and lies, songs and truths /
